Bhava or House in astrology is a Sanskrit word which means both ‘the state of existence’ and ‘state of mind’. A bhava (house) is thus more a ‘home’ than it is a ‘house’. It is a home to all your experiences related in that segment of your life. The houses of the horoscope indicate where and on whom or on what the planetary energies act.
Most horoscopic traditions of astrology systems divide the horoscope into twelve houses whose positions depend on time and location rather than on a date. In Hindu astrological tradition these are known as Bhavas. The houses of the horoscope represent different fields of experience wherein the energies of the signs and planets operate described in terms of physical surroundings as well as personal life experiences.
In Vedic Astrology, Astrologer divides the whole sky (360 degrees) into 12 equal parts and each part is ruled by some zodiac sign. Horoscope is basically the map of Sky and it’s Planetary position. Each Horoscope is divided into 12 boxes (Bhavas) and each box we say House (Bhavas). As per individual’s Date of Birth, Birth Time and Birth Place, Astrologer decides Ascendant ( The first house) and then they cast planets as per their position at the time of Birth. Lagna is always the First House and house numbering starts anti-clockwise.
The twelve houses of a horoscope deal with all conceivable aspects of life. The most important of all houses is the lagna or the first house. The remaining houses are basically related to the first house only. The planets in the horoscopic chart are subservient to the lagna, and their original nature undergoes modifications depending upon the lagna. The houses from the lagna to the seventh represent the right half of the body of the native (and the left half of the body of his spouse). Those from the seventh to the lagna represent his left half, and the right half of his spouse.
First House (The Ascendent/ The Lagna): This is also called Lagna house i.e the house of self. This is one of the most important houses in the horoscope chart. This house represents the physical stature, complexion, form, and shape of an individual. The health, vigor, vitality and natural tendencies are controlled by this house. This also represents personality, jest for life, honor, dignity, well being, the upper part of the face, longevity and start in life.
Second House (The House of Wealth): All money matters are governed by this house. Fortune, profits and gain, power and resources, security, material achievements, jewelry, shares, security, speech, eyes, vision, stocks and bonds, precious stones, memory, education, tongue, nose teeth, chin, and family are governed by this house. This is also a Maraka Sthana or a death inflicting house.
Third House (The House of Courage and Siblings): The mental intellect and disposition is governed by this house. courage and the ability to achieve things and complete tasks are represented by this house. Relationships with brothers and sisters, assistance or otherwise from them are also studied from this house. Relations with neighbors, valor, short travels, communication and transport, correspondence, writing, change of residence, contracts, agreements, rumors carrying tales, hands, throat, shoulder blade, collar bones arms and nervous system are some things that this house gives information about.
Fourth House (The House Mother and Pleasures): Mother, native place, residence, domestic environment, grave, private affairs, secret life, luxury vehicles, fields, pasture, farms, orchards, mines, buildings, houses, ancestral property, hidden treasure, academic education, wells, water, milk, ponds, lakes, etc are represented by this house.
Fifth House (The House of Progeny and Romance): Progeny, whether one will have children or not, of what sex, inclination, recreation, pleasure, artistic talents, entertainment & amusement, sports, excelling in competitive activities like crosswords, cards, games of chance, gambling or betting, love affairs ambassador, good or bad morals, mantra, tantra, religious mindedness, high learning and wisdom, enormous riches, spiritual practices, etc are represented by this house.
Sixth House (The House Enemy and Disease): Types of disease, whether they will be curable or not, nursing, food, services, employees, subordinates or servants, debts, cattle, tenants, jealousy, enemies, maternal uncle, mental anguish, opposition, injuries, accident, wounds sustained in war, loans, debts, losses, disappointments, obstacles, poisons, slanders, humiliation, cruelty, indulgence in prohibited acts, theft, quarrels, imprisonment, maternal uncles, maternal aunt, step-mother, pets, cattle, quadrupeds, flavours of food, servants, subordinates are represented by this house.
Seventh House (The House of Marriage and Partnership): Earthly ties and unions, legal bondage, spouse, partners in business, conjugal life, litigation, influence in foreign countries, success and reputation in foreign travels, dangers in life, Relationship with spouse, gains or losses after marriage, type of spouse and his/her physical, deviation from one’s path, partnership in business, overt enemies, quarrels, theft, loss of memory, recovery of lost wealth, and mental disposition.
Eighth House (The House of Accidents and Death): Longevity and span of life, inheritance, legacy, wills, insurance, pension, gratuity, accidents, fire or suicide, misery, misfortune, sorrow, strife, worries, disgrace, delay, dejection, disappointment, loss, obstruction, theft, and robbery, capital punishment, nature of death, place of death, wickedness, father’s indebtedness, deviation from expected norms, frightful place, difficult route, crevices, finding faults, spiritual pursuits and attainments, inheritance, son of the elder sister etc are represented by this house.
Ninth House (The House of Fate and Fortune): Devotional and religious learning, karmas of the present birth, Faiths, Wisdom, divine worship, pilgrimages, philosophy, fortune, religious disposition, meditation, intuition, sacrifices and charity, father, preceptor, learning and teaching, dreams and visions, long journeys, air and sea travel, higher education foreign travels, splendour, association with the virtuous, auspiciousness, the preceptor or guru, father, austerity, penance, charity etc are represented by this house.
Tenth House (The House of Profession): Profession, function, source of livelihood, governmental service, honour from the king, business, status, wealth, political power, fame, progress, nature of work, professional inclination, the treating physician, hidden treasure, prescribed course, teaching capability, self-control, dominance, sacrificing nature, proficiency, father’s wealth and well-being, foreign travel, financial status, place of residence, performance of sacred and religious deeds, honour, dignity, public esteem, power and prestige, credit and recognition received for a task completed, success and status, rank and renown, respect and fame etc are represented by this house.
Eleventh House (The House of Gains): Friends, society, Gains of all nature, income, acquisition, fulfilment of desires, nature of earning, arrival, community, favorites, ambitions and wish fulfillment, a gain of wealth, success in undertakings, incoming wealth, prosperity, elder brothers, recovery from illness, the dawn of fortune, fondness for precious stones, lost wealth, pursuit of pious and religious deeds, profits and returns, elder brother, paternal uncle etc are represented by this house.
Twelfth House (The House of Expense and Losses): Losses and impediments, spending money for prescribed or prohibited pursuits, pleasures of the bed, bedroom, mental anguish, loss of sleep restraint and limitation, waste and extravagance, expenses whether good or bad, deception, investments and donations, charity, misery and misfortune, sorrow and sin, secret enemies, involvement in scandals, disgrace, and insults, secret sorrows. Success through occult affairs, the feel, left eye, left ear, bed pleasures, life and activities in foreign places etc are represented by this house.
